DEVELOPING
LINKS BETWEEN
IRAN AND THE UNITED STATES
This
meeting - the first such occasion since the Islamic revolution in Iran - was
intended to explore ways of strengthening friendly links between the citizens
of Iran and the United States and of improving people-to-people relations between
the two countries. Twenty-eight Iranian and American community leaders along
with heads of NGOs exchanged views on issues of joint concern in each other's
countries and identified seven specific areas for future collaboration, namely
media, women and children, education, commerce, the environment, the arts and
NGO development. The informal and friendly atmosphere in which discussions were
held served to encourage an open and frank exchange of views between participants.
The meeting was regarded as a valuable first step towards institutionalising
what had previously been an informal network of links and contacts between individuals
operating within the two countries.
