THE
RELIGIOUS IMPLICATIONS OF THE MIDDLE EAST PEACE PROCESS
This
high-level meeting was organised in conjunction with the InterAction Council,
a distinguished body made up of former heads of government and world leaders.
It focused on the potential for religion to encourage peace in the Middle East.
Helmut Schmidt, former Chancellor of West Germany, played a key role in the
discussion, which was chaired by former President of Cyprus, Dr George Vassiliou.
One
of the areas explored during the two-day meeting was the role religious leaders
can play in building trust and developing community relations. There was further
discussion of ways in which the access that religious leaders have to the lives
and confidence of ordinary people could be best directed towards facilitating
peace in the region.
